SEDGE — ML & AI platform launched

The launch of SEDGE in 2017 added Solverminds' cloud-based analytics platform — the foundation that later supported OptiBox forecasting and SONATA stowage planning.

In 2017 Solverminds launched SEDGE, a cloud-based machine-learning and AI analytics platform built specifically for liner shipping. SEDGE became the analytics layer that sat on top of the existing ERP — and the foundation that later products including OptiBox and SONATA were built against.

Six concrete operational areas

The launch positioned SEDGE around six operational areas where AI can produce measurable cost reduction in liner operations: port cost reduction, bunker hedging, asset deployment, box repairs, demand forecasting, and intermodal logistics. Each one was a domain where carriers had previously been making decisions on hunch rather than on data.

Why the timing mattered

Container shipping in 2017 was beginning to digest the implications of consolidation, slow-steaming, and alliance restructuring. The carriers that came out of that period in better shape were the ones with data they could actually act on. SEDGE shipped into that window.

What it became

Later products built on SEDGE technology include OptiBox (empty container repositioning, 2021) — explicitly noted as "backed by SEDGE technology" in the OptiBox whitepaper — and the AI-augmented modules of OptiFleet and the TANKER Optimizer. The 2017 launch was the foundation; everything since has been the extension.
